Allgemeines

Die Grüne Muräne erreicht eine Gesamtlänge von 2 bis 2,3 Metern und ein Gewicht von bis zu 29 kg. Der Körperbau ist kräftig. Der Körper ist einfarbig grünbraun gefärbt. Jungtiere sind allerdings eher braun und die kleinen Jungfische sogar schwärzlich mit einem weißen Unterkiefer. Die Grüne Muräne hat einen hohen und gut entwickelten Flossensaum. Diese sehr große Muräne ist ein guter Schwimmer.

Verbreitung

Das Verbreitungsgebiet der Grünen Muräne reicht im tropischen und subtropischen westlichen Atlantik von New Jersey über die Bermudas bis zur Küste von Süd-Brasilien. Des Weiteren ist sie im nördlichen Golf von Mexiko beheimatet. Als Lebensraum dienen vor allem Korallen- und Felsriffe und in Mangrovengebiete. Zu finden ist die Grüne Muräne in Tiefen von bis zu 30 Metern. Aber auch in Flussmündungen und sogar in Hafenbecken ist diese Muräne bereits entdeckt worden.

Lebensweise

Als Einzelgänger verbringt die nachtaktive Grüne Muräne den Tag meistens in Höhlen oder Spalten versteckt. Hin und wieder schwimmt sie aber auch frei umher.

Ernährung

Die Nahrung besteht aus FischKrebsen, Sepien und Kraken.

Über die Fortpflanzung ist derzeit leider noch nichts bekannt.

Die Grüne Muräne und der Mensch

Die Grüne Muräne gilt als Speisefisch, der frisch oder eingesalzen vermarktet wird. Doch muss man hier vorsichtig sein, denn das Fleisch der größeren Muränen kann das Ciguatera-Gift enthalten. Ciguatera ist die häufigste Art von Fischvergiftung. Fischer und Taucher müssen sich ebenfalls vor den großen Exemplaren in Acht nehmen. Denn durch die enorme Größe der Grünen Muräne, ist auch der Kiefer entsprechend groß und daher kann die Muräne große und gefährliche Bisswunden verursachen.
